My name is Matthew Crawford, and I am from Somerset, Kentucky. I am a junior at Western Kentucky University in the Nursing Program and a member of the 6th Bike4Alz expedition taking off the summer of 2018.
Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States. Every 67 seconds someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. These facts didn’t mean anything to me until I was directly affected by the disease.
I am riding because my grandmother was recently diagnosed with dementia and Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia. I have watched my grandmother, who was once very quick thinking and sharp witted, struggle to form full sentences. Bike4Alz is giving me the opportunity to ride for my grandmother and others affected by this terrible disease. I’m excited to bike for memories. I’m excited to bike for Alz.
