Nevada and Utah: Desert Days

Hello Friends! Today we are enjoying a rest day in the Salt Lake City area after a 9-day, 600 mile stretch of biking through Nevada and Utah. This stretch offered challenges including a heat wave and plenty of mountains. We biked an average of 65 miles a day through the desert with a repetitive sequence of mountains and valleys. We traveled on US 50 known as the “The Loneliest Highway in America”. This allowed us to stay at some remote stops that gave us some great, new experiences such as our camping in Middlegate. Advertised as “The Middle of Nowhere” with a population of 17, Middlegate has a singular restaurant where we enjoyed talking to locals and taking part in Bike4Alz traditions. Our hardest day was a near 80-miler with long uphills and intense heat. After finishing this day and reaching the Utah state line, the team prevailed with a new confidence. For our first two nights in Utah, we stayed at Delta High School where we took advantage of showers and washing machines after a long hiatus. We were hosted and fed by Dick and Becky, longtime supporters of Bike4Alz. They prepared us delicious home cooked meals and we even had the opportunity to ride with Dick through his hometown of Delta. On our rest day today, we are busy with oil changes, bike repairs, body treatment and an Alzheimer’s bake sale this afternoon. The daunting challenge of the Rocky Mountains is next, but we are excited. If you would like to follow our route and daily progress, we post every ride on the app Strava. On the app you can find us by name, our full roster is available on the “Meet the Riders 2021”. Thank you!
